About ADHD
ADHD can profoundly affect one's life, influencing everything from personal relationships to professional achievements. What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a pattern of behaviors that include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These behaviors often appear in childhood and can continue into adulthood. People with ADHD might have difficulty focusing on a single task, managing time, staying organized, remembering details, or sitting still.
ADHD varies widely in symptoms and severity, and it’s considered to be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive evaluation, including input from multiple sources such as family members, teachers, and medical professionals.

How is ADHD diagnosed?
ADHD is diagnosed through a detailed evaluation by qualified health professionals. The process includes gathering information from various sources, such as school reports, behavior checklists, and medical history, to rule out other possible causes of symptoms. There are no single tests to diagnose ADHD, which makes detailed observations and assessments crucial.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria are often used to identify the presence of characteristic symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity that have persisted for at least six months and are inappropriate for the individual's developmental level.
What treatment options are available for ADHD?
Treatment for ADHD typically includes a combination of behavioral therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments. Medications, like stimulants and non-stimulants, can help manage symptoms by improving attention and reducing impulsivity and hyperactivity.
Behavioral therapies focus on teaching skills to manage time, improve organizational habits, and develop better social interactions. Lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices can also support overall well-being.
Individualized treatment plans are essential, and what works best can vary from person to person.

I was told that only children can have ADHD!
Research has clearly shown that adults can have ADHD. While many associate the disorder with childhood, the symptoms can continue into adulthood and sometimes the condition is not diagnosed until later in life.
Adult symptoms of ADHD may differ somewhat from those in children. Adults are more likely to exhibit less overt hyperactivity and more often show symptoms like restlessness, difficulty completing tasks, poor time management skills, impulsivity in decision making, and problems with focus and organization.
Recognizing ADHD in adults can be challenging as their symptoms often overlap with those of other conditions or life stresses.
How can ADHD coaching help manage ADHD symptoms?
ADHD coaching is a specialized type of coaching that focuses on strategies to cope with the daily challenges of living with ADHD.
Coaches work with individuals to create tailored strategies for organization, prioritizing, and completing tasks. They also help develop routines that enhance focus and productivity.
Additionally, ADHD coaching can offer support in managing relationships and social interactions, reducing procrastination, and building self-esteem. Coaches provide accountability and encouragement, which can be particularly beneficial in helping individuals with ADHD recognize their strengths and achieve their personal and professional goals.
