If you are new to life coaching, I'm sure you will have a lot of questions. So, congratulations! You're in the right place!

This blog post gives you a brief introduction to what you can expect from life coaching. What is it? How does it work? And more importantly, what it can do for you?

What is it?

Life coaching is a collaborative partnership between you, the client, and a professional coach aimed at helping you identify and achieve your personal and professional goals. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on understanding past experiences and emotions, life coaching is future-oriented and action-focused. We won’t analyze your past, but rather work together to design your future.

Through tailored techniques and strategies, a life coach acts as a catalyst for your personal development journey. From defining clear goals to holding you accountable for your actions, a life coach provides the support and motivation needed to unlock your full potential and lead a more fulfilling life.

Who is it for?

Life coaching can benefit a wide range of people facing various challenges and transitions in life. If you are experiencing burnout, grappling with significant life changes, losing passion for your work, or feeling uncertain about your future, life coaching can help you draw on your personal strengths to build strategies and support to get you where you want to be.

Whether you're seeking to overcome obstacles, gain clarity in your career, improve your relationships, or simply want to lead a more fulfilling life, life coaching offers the support and guidance needed to navigate these situations effectively.

How does it work?

During a life coaching session, you can expect thought-provoking questions, goal-setting exercises, and a clear action plan to help you gain direction in your life. By exploring your values, beliefs, and challenges, you will embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth under the guidance of your coach.

At Different Keys, we provide a confidential, non-judgemental and encouraging space to help you explore fresh perspectives and try out different strategies.  During the coaching process, you will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of your own unique strengths.  This strength-based approach increases your self-awareness and confidence levels, and provides a foundation to help you manage your challenges, improve productivity and cultivate the positive changes you want to see in your life.

What happens in a coaching session?

A coaching conversation is not like a standard everyday conversation, where you might ask advice from a friend or colleague. In coaching conversations, the coach employs specific techniques such as active listening, powerful questioning, and constructive feedback to facilitate accountability, understanding and actionable planning to support your personal and professional growth.

A typical coaching session (60 mins) will usually follow the structure below:

Reconnect and Review (5-10 minutes)

  • After a friendly greeting, the coach asks about the client's progress and achievements, challenges or insights since the last session

  • Postiive changes, insights and wins are celecreated. Challenges are noted, so we can build strategies that take them into account if necessary.

Topic and Outcome (5-10 minutes)

  • The client identifies a topic for the coaching session.

  • The coach helps the client clarify the relevance of the issue, and the aims of the session are agreed.

Exploration and Awareness Building (20-30 minutes)

  • The coach uses specific types of questions to enable the client to deepen their understanding of the issue being discussed. The particular direction of discussion will differ according to the circumstances, but nevertheless it is common for the coach and client to consider potential obstacles, actions and alternatives, and strategies for engaging with others.

Key Points and Take Aways (5-10 minutes)

  • As the session draws towards the end, the coach asks the client about the notable points of the discussion

Actions and Accountability (5-10 minutes)

  • The coach and client co-create an action plan that takes into account any potential barriers to progress and support needs

Conclusions and Close (1-5 minutes)

  • The session ends with encouragement and a positive reinforcing of the client's commitments to their goals.

What's the difference between coaching and therapy?

While both coaching and therapy offer valuable support, they serve different purposes. Therapy often focuses on healing from past experiences, understanding emotions, and managing mental health conditions. It delves into the "why" behind certain behaviors and feelings, helping individuals work through trauma and psychological issues.

In contrast, life coaching is future-oriented and action-focused. It helps clients set and achieve goals, improve performance, and enhance overall well-being. Coaching can complement therapy by providing additional support and structure for personal growth. For example, while therapy might help someone understand and heal from past trauma, coaching can help them build confidence and set actionable steps towards a brighter future.

However, there are times when it might be necessary to take a break from coaching. If a client is dealing with significant emotional or mental health issues that require deep psychological work, therapy should take precedence. Once these issues are managed, the client can return to coaching to continue their personal development journey.

What are the benefits?

Commitment plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of life coaching. Your willingness to invest time, effort, and openness to change is key to achieving tangible results. By actively participating in sessions and implementing strategies discussed with your coach, you set the stage for transformative outcomes.

Rest assured, a life coach is not there to scold or judge you. Instead, they offer support, encouragement, and accountability to keep you on track towards your goals. If you face obstacles or setbacks, a coach will help you explore alternative solutions and navigate challenges with resilience and positivity.

In today's fast-paced world, more individuals are turning to life coaching as a proactive approach to personal growth and success. The personalized guidance, unbiased perspective, and structured approach of life coaching resonate with those seeking clarity, empowerment, and meaningful change in their lives.
